ReTardis for Who
31 Days of Horror Side Project
Penpal (2012)
This is a hard book to review, because you don’t really want to spoil anything in the book by talking about it. So that said, this is hands down my favorite book I’ve read this year and that’s saying something. According to my goodreads reading challenge, I’m now at 66 books read for the year and there’s no slouches on there. I read A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, which is an awesome book. Books by some of my favorite authors: Stephen King, Grant Morrison, George R.R. Martin and I read The Shadow of the Wind, another amazing book about books. I read my favorite book about a political person that I’ve ever read this year. Hands down though, Penpal by Dathan Auerbach is my favorite book this year.
This book actually started, from my knowledge, on the website Reddit as a short story. The people at Reddit liked it so much, that they convinced the author to continue the story and now this book is the result of all of that. I don’t really say anything else about the book. It was amazing! I read a majority of it in a crowded room, hundreds of people, bright lights and the chills I got gave me goosebumps, sent chills down my spine and raised the hair on the back of my neck. It’s not just scary though, it’s really, really emotionally affecting (read: I teared up several times). I really connected with the characters and I don’t even want to say why. Awesome book, I don’t know much about Mr. Auerbach, but I hope he continues writing, he’s a shining example of the business I want to be in.
